MAKING THE RUNNING by IAN BALDING

Making the Running: A Racing Life by Ian Balding

Firstly, a Very Happy New Year to everyone and here's hoping it will be a very happy year for Phoenix Reach too.

For anyone interested, and as Andrew Balding is clearly an extremely important person in Phoenix's life and career, I was very interested in reading his father's book which I was kindly given to me as a Christmas present. I can thoroughly recommend it and I was thrilled to see it also mentions Phoenix Reach.

Ian Balding has led an extremely interesting life, and the book shares the journey of Ian and his elder brother Toby, and all the other members of the family in great detail. It is extremely informative and has some very humurous moments too. All in all, a great read.

The review from Amazon reads as follows:-
Reviews

The Sunday Times
'An all-rounder...he can now add the words 'fine author' to his CV.'

Book Description
The great trainer recounts his fascinating upbringing and career among the best horsemen and women of the world

Synopsis
The image of the Derby winner with his leg in plaster was broadcast around the world. Alongside Mill Reef stood a baby-faced man who had won the Arc, the King George, the Eclipse, and now the Derby. He trained for the Queen and Queen Mother; and Lester Piggot, Willie Carson and Frankie Dettori all rode for him, but where had he come from and how had he got there? Ian Balding's story is one of heartbreaking loss and outrageous good luck. He gained entrance to Cambridge by catching a book rather than reading it, left without a degree but with a rugby blue, and became one of the outstanding amateur sportsmen of his generation. Balding's burgeoning talent was quickly notice and he was head-hunted by Peter Hastings-Bass, who tragically died just three months later, leaving Ian in charge of his stables at Kingsclere. Ian had no money and no experience of running a business, but he learnt fast. In Making the Running. Ian Balding reveals the pressure of maintaining the pace and shares the highs and lows of the sport of kings.

About the Author
Born in the USA in 1938, Ian Balding came to Britain aged seven. After settling at Kingsclere in 1964, he became an internationally respected trainer. He now serves on many BHB and NTF committees and also writes regularly for Country Illustrated and Horse & Hound. Ian married Emma Hastings-Bass in 1969 and they have two children: Clare, a successful journalist and BBC broadcaster, and Andrew, Ian's successor at Kingsclere
